Q: What Is A Senior Move Manager?

A:  A Senior Move Manager is a professional who specializes in assisting older adults and their families with the emotional and physical aspects of downsizing, organizing and either relocation or aging in place.  Senior Move Managers come from all different backgrounds, but they share a commitment to seniors and their families and enjoy the meaningful work that they do.

Senior Move Managers have extensive knowledge about the costs, quality and availability of community resources.

Because they focus exclusively on the downsizing and move process, Senior Move Managers have significant expertise in resources and approaches that save money, reduce stress and produce quality results.  They also know various strategies that organize and monetize the possessions that may not be kept by the family.

Q: Why Are Senior Move Management Services Needed?

A:  Many older adults making a transition have not moved in many years, and may have a great deal of possessions that they have accumulated over a lifetime.  Becuase of this, they often need to downsize considerably. Many, if not most, typically find themselves overwhelmed by the process and/or not physically able to do it.

Even though family and friends want to help, they often have geographic, demographic or psychographic barriers such as:

  • Live too far away

  • Sandwiched between the need of aging parents  & children

  • Juggling conflicting demands of careers, home and family

  • Physically unable to help because they are older themselves

  • Emotionally drained due to illness or death

As a result, the Senior Move Management Service Profession has emerged to fill these gaps, and to make the moving and adjustment process easier for everyone involved.

Q: What Do Senior Move Managers Do?

Q: How Do Senior Move Managers Charge For Their Services?

A:  The charges for Senior Move Management Services vary by provider, geographic market and services rendered. Most charge by the hour.  According to a recent survey conducted by the National Association of Senior Move Managers, nationwide, across the United States, average hourly rates range from $60-$140 per hour.  The complexity of the job, and the scope of the services selected will determine the number of hours needed to complete each client’s engagement.

NEXTChapter charges different rates for Team Members, Team Leaders and Move Coordinators.  This allows us to charge appropriately for each portion of the job, according to the levels of expertise needed to execute the various tasks.

Q: What Questions Should I Ask Senior Move Managers?

A:

  • What specific senior move services do you provide?

  • What do you charge for the services that you provide?

  • Do you add mark-ups to other services that you arrange?

  • Do you add mark-ups or gain any financial benefit from services provided by others that you arrange for clients?

  • Do you provide written estimates and contracts?

  • Are you a member of the National Association of Senior Move Managers?

  • Are you fully insured and bonded for liability and workers compensation?

Q: How Far In Advance Do We Need To Start The Process?

A:  It is never too soon to get a complimentary assessment, which can ease your worries. It depends on what needs to be done prior to the move. An estate sale can take a month or more to arrange. Some clients and their families prefer to go through the sorting and downsizing process over a longer period of time, which can help them not feel rushed through the process.  Everyone’s needs are different, so it is best to contact us as soon as you decide to make a move.

Q: Can I Pack Some Of My Own Things?

A:  Certainly. Remember, however, that boxes get stacked in the moving truck, so a good packing job with the right supplies is important. You are responsible for the items in the boxes you pack.

Q: I Have Lived In My Home For Years. How Do I Decide What To Bring?

A:  Your NEXTChapter Move Manager can help lay out your new floor plan, measuring the rooms and working with you to decide what items you want and what will realistically fit in your new home.  Once you determine which furniture pieces will go with you, you will be able to determine which additional items can go, based on the floor plan we have created.

Q: I Know I Need To Downsize. Can You Help Me?

A:  As  Senior Move Managers, members of the NEXTChapter Team are trained to become valued resources for downsizing. From going through your treasured possessions, determining what items are wanted by family members or other close relations, to deciding how best to deal with determining the next steps for the items that you won’t be taking with you to you new home, we can help!  Whether you need resources for estate sale planners, appraisers, consignment shops, charitable organizations, online sales, we are happy to provide guidance throughout this process.

Q: Are You A Moving Company?

A:  No. We plan, coordinate, and manage all aspects of your move. As part of that service, we recommend and hire only the best in moving companies to transport your cherished belongings.  We are happy to work with a moving company that you wish to retain, or are prepared to interview and make a recommendation based on your individual needs.

In general, Movers are paid by the piece - an incentive to pack quickly and use as many boxes as possible.  Senior Move Managers pack to unpack, they use careful labeling so boxes are placed in the right rooms to unpack.  This equals a smoother Move Day. NEXTChapter also takes digital photographs prior to packing, so we can recreate the environment at your new home.  We unpack and put everything away, so the client feels settled from the very first day!

Q: I Am Moving To (Or From) Another State. Can You Help Me?

A:  Yes. We plan and pack (or unpack) for long-distance moves. We also can assist in locating a similar service on the other end.  As a member of the National Association of Senior Move Managers, we have access to and can coordinate with Senior Move Managers throughout the United States to complete your long-distance move.

Q: How Does Being A Member Of The National Association Of Move Managers (NASMM) Provide Benefits To NEXTChapter’s Clients?

A:  NASMM Members have significant expertise in resources and approaches that save money, reduce stress and produce quality results.

  • Services are client-centered and personalized to meet the client’s needs and preferences. Families, particularly, should never doubt the power of an outside expert!

  • NASMM members are reviewed for insurance and experience requirements prior to acceptance.

  • Ongoing educational programs reflect the NASMM commitment to professionalism, continually increasing our skills, and to working with older adults.

  • NASMM has developed a Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for all members.

Q: What Makes NEXTChapter Senior Transitions Different From Just A Moving Company?

A:  NASMM Move Managers provide a multi-faceted approach to the move process: from space planning in the beginning to post-move support and advocacy.

  • NEXTChapter Move Managers minimize the chaos and stress associated with moving by addressing all aspects of the move process. They are responsible for creating and executing a seamless action plan, customized to the client’s wishes.

  • Actually, some but not all NASMM Move Managers are also movers. Those providers that are not movers will work closely with a reputable local moving company to complete that aspect of the job.

  • With the gentle and expert guidance of an NEXTChapter Move Manager, older adults and families make the key decisions without the emotional and physical distress that can follow. As a result, they avoid the costly mistakes and remorse that often accompany such major lifestyle transitions.

  • NEXTChapter Move Managers do so much more than simply sort, settle and move boxes; with loads of energy, enthusiasm and experience, Senior Move Managers take the worry (and work!) out of the move process. The client’s job is to simply settle in and enjoy his or her new living arrangement and next chapter!
